　　There are many times when it is important to understand different hand gestures. If you are in a setting where hearing is difficult or you are speaking to someone who doesn't understand your language, hand gestures may be the only way to communicate with others. However, meanings may differ depending on the nationality of the person to whom you are gesturing.

　　Thumbs­up

　　As far as most in the Western world are concerned, thumbs­up is a positive sign, a signal that everything is okay. It is believed that the positive meaning of thumbs­up in the Western countries originated (起源) with World War Ⅱ pilots. However, in certain countries, including many in Latin America, West Africa, Greece, Russia, the Middle East, thumbs­up gestures are considered offensive (冒犯性的)．
