Actress Jiang Yiyan volunteers as a teacher

A Chinese actress has made the headlines - not on the screen, but as a volunteer teacher in a remote① mountain village.

Jiang Yiyan, has spent nearly 10 years since 2006 as a volunteer teacher in Bama county, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region②.

Jiang's voluntary work remained unknown to the public until recently a documentary③ on her work has been watched by many people. The 17minute film is an interview with Jiang and shows her experience as a parttime volunteer teacher at the school.

Though some criticized④ her for drawing attention to herself by working as a volunteer, many praised her for her good deeds.

Many schools in China's least developed areas lack teachers due to low pay and poor living conditions. In the past few years, college graduates, voluntary organizations and charity groups have been encouraged to work as volunteers in the schools.

The talented actress was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, in 1983. She entered Beijing Film Academy in 2002 and graduated in 2006. Jiang rose to fame for her role in the TV drama We Have Nowhere to Place Youth shown in 2007. Her excellent performances in various films have gained public acceptance.

Jiang Yiyan is also a writer and has published her literature work I Am Climber Little Jiang.,
