Bob's father works in a restaurant. Last Friday Bob didn't have to go to school, so he went to work with his father. They had to get the food prepared before 11:30 a.m.

Bob filled a large pot with water. His father cleaned and cut carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. His father cut some beef, too.

Then someone came to the back door. It was Mr. Hunt, an old man living nearby. He asked Bob's father to give him some bones. He needed some bones to feed his dog. Bob's father agreed and asked him to come later. Mr. Hunt thanked him and left.

Bob's father added all the vegetables and the beef to the water and began to cook them. He put the bones into a white jar (罐子). Then he put the jar into the refrigerator to keep the bones fresh.

Soon the soup was OK and Bob's father poured it into jars. The jars looked just like the one with the bones. After he put the jars inside the refrigerator, Bob's father began to make some salad.

At 11:20 a.m., Bob's father finished all his work, and it was time to go home. "Take some soup home for lunch," said the chef (厨师长). He gave Bob a jar from the refrigerator.

"I can't wait to taste your soup, Dad," Bob said when they got home. But when Bob looked into the jar, he couldn't believe his eyes. "Dad," he shouted, "we've got the jar with the bones!"

"Oh, the chef must have made a mistake," said his father. "Well, I really hope Mr. Hunt's dog likes my soup!"

Something was crying (叫) outside. So I went out to see what was happening. A small cat sat by the door. It must run for a long time as it looked tired and dirty. I let it into my house. I took out some food, and this poor cat ate all. Then I got my own cats' fish, and it ate that too!

My eight-year-old daughter Annie and her cousin Julia were really interested in the cat. They bathed (给......洗澡) it and fed it more food. Annie asked me to keep it. But I didn't agree. It wasn't because I didn't love it. I already had some pets at home, three birds and two cats. And our house was not big enough to keep more. Another reason was that I thought it might get lost. And its owner must be worried about it. Then I put up notices all over the town in the hope of finding its home. I also bought ad (广告) time on a radio station. Three weeks later, there was still no response (答复).

Finally, I decided to keep the cat. Though our house was small, I would try my best to take good care of it.
