I want to tell about my admiration for my high-school music teacher, Dell Frickey. She was strict, patient and confident. She ran an excellent music program, and her team won prizes at all sorts of state, national, and international competitions. I didn't realize at first how fortunate I was to have had her as a teacher for three years. Her enthusiasm(热情)for music and art was like a breath of fresh air for me. She was nothing less than a living inspiration. Because of her I wanted to live surrounded by musical instruments, and by people singing and performing. At that time, I didn't see how I could possibly achieve such a life as a musician. A dream like that didn't seem realistic to me. I was a poor girl with an alcoholic(酒鬼) father, and a mom who had died before I entered high school, leaving me with two younger brothers to take care of. Most of my youthful freedom died with my mother. After graduation, I turned down a music scholarship and joined the army so that I would get pay and send it home to support my younger brothers. But I never forgot music. The hours that I'd spent learning and memorizing countless songs encouraged me to dream of finding a place for myself in music one day. And a few years later I made it to university, and studied music after all. Mrs. Frickey is the only teacher I remember by name. I can recall her facial expressions when she was pleased or displeased, and the shapes of her hands and fingers, which seemed to be in constant motion. She isn't a beautiful woman, but she has a really beautiful soul.
