to war with Germany. But Germany did not listen and invaded Poland. Then Britain and France got mad at Germany, and declared war on Germany, September 3, 1939. Thus World War Two had started.

T: Thanks. Can we say both the world wars were started for reasons of "greed"? What about the American Civil War?

S4: After Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he did away with the slavery. But the South wanted to break away from the union and set up their own country, where they would be free to keep slavery. Thus the American Civil War broke out in 1861.

T: Thanks for sharing with us. So it is clear that the war was started for reasons of "race prejudices". Now open your books and turn to Page 25. Let's deal with Ex 8.

Step II Speaking

Deal with Ex 8.

Ask students to make a presentation about the reasons what wars are fought. It is better for students to make the presentation with the help of the multimedia computer so that they can make their presentation attracting and vivid.

T: Wars are fought for many different reasons. Some are fought for the good of mankind. Others are the result of man's greed and prejudices. Now I'd like you to make a presentation about the reasons. Your presentation should include the following three questions.

1. For what reasons could wars be fought for the good of mankind?

2. List some wars in history that fought for the justice of mankind.

3. List wars that were fought for reasons of greed or prejudices.

Students are given 15 minutes to present their reasons. Only one in each group is given the chance to present the reasons in front of the class.

Step III Vocabulary

Ask students to read Lexicon, page 104. Then deal with Ex 7 on Page 25.

When doing Ex 5, if necessary, encourage students to use a good dictionary.
