Chopsticks are usually two long, thin pieces of wood or bamboo. They can also be made of plastic, animal bone or metal. Sometimes chopsticks are quite artistic. Truly elegant chopsticks might be made (make) of gold and silver with Chinese characters. Skilled workers also combine various hardwoods and metal to create (create) special designs.

The Chinese have used chopsticks for five thousand years. People probably cooked their food in large pots, using (use) twigs (树枝) to remove it. Over time, as/when the population grew, people began cutting food into small pieces so it would cook more quickly. Food in small pieces could be eaten easily with twigs which gradually (gradual) turned into chopsticks.

Some people think that the great Chinese scholar Confucius, who lived from roughly 551 to 479 B.C., influenced the development (develop) of chopsticks. Confucius believed knives would remind people of killings and were (be) too violent for use at the table.

Chopsticks are not used everywhere in Asia. In India, for example, most people traditionally eat with their hands.

The summer holiday is coming. My classmates and I are talking about how to do during the holiday. We can chose between staying at home and take a trip. If we stay at home, it is comfortable but there is no need to spend money. But in that case, we will learn little about world. If we go on a trip abroad, we can broaden your view and gain knowledges we cannot get from books. Some classmates suggest we can go to places of interest nearby. I thought that it is a good idea. It does not cost many, yet we can still learn a lot.
