For many years, people have been searching for a way to linger longer beneath the sea. Today, we have much more advanced equipment to allow people to stay underwater for long periods of time. Scuba and snuba are two ways that people can "breathe" underwater.

Scuba and snuba divers both breathe air from tanks. Tubes from the tank deliver air to the diver's mouthpiece. The difference between these two methods is where the tank is located. A scuba diver carries the tank on his or her back while swimming. By carrying the air supply, the scuba diver swims freely and can go hundreds of feet deep. With snuba, the swimmer does not wear the air tank. Instead, the tank stays on a raft (筏子) on the water's surface. A twentyfoot tube brings the air from the raft tank to the swimmer's mouthpiece. The snuba swimmer can breathe underwater, but he or she is always attached to the raft and can only swim twenty feet deep.

A scuba diver has the underwater freedom, but that freedom comes with a cost. Scuba divers carry equipment that weighs 60 to 75 pounds. Learning how to use this equipment requires a lot of training. A
